Do Not Disturb

A friend sent me an email with a YouTube video he called "truly disturbing." It's some American Nazis giving speeches in front of a government building.

I didn't find it disturbing. Perhaps if I were living overseas I might think these people have some grip on the American public, but as a citizen I know better. Even on the video you can hear the white supremacists being met with cries of "go home." It's also clear they need a lot of police protection. Almost everyone here understands how vile and foolish these people are.

The truth is Jews are safer and doing better in the United States than any other country. There's a lot more anti-Semitism elsewhere, and I don't just mean in the Middle East. I mean Europe. Now that's disturbing.

I don't know German, but everyone says that Hitler's rhetoric was very moving.

I do know English, and these folks sound like idiots.

Also, I don't believe for a moment that America will start persecuting minorities, but if that were to happen it would begin with sensible-sounding folks on television who urged, bit by bit, that "we" be tough on immigrants, etc. The idea that this could happen through a bunch of folks who are imitating the flags and salutes of a country that was our enemy in the greatest war in living memory is absurd! Can you imagine if Hitler had tried to win elections by using French symbols?

You mean like using words like "Freedom" and "Democracy" and "Security" as mere slogans devoid of their true meaning?
I honestly do not know the answer but how were the original NAtional Socialists viewed in the early 20s-as ridiculous clowns by a fair number I'm guessing (as we once viewed Rush Limbaugh). While I do not believe that the current American Nazis or the Alamo Foundation or the American version of the Revolutionary Communist Party or [pick your own extremist]are a threat to the American way of life, I wouldn't hang it on the fact that they seem ridiculous when compared to the status quo--standards tend to change based on conditions we can't always foresee.

America is stronger, not weaker, because it allows all sorts of viewpoints. There may be a lot of ugly ones out there, but having a free society allows these ideas to be expressed in non-violent ways. Also, occasionally, some of these fringe ideas are good enough to be accepted by the mainstream.

American Nazis have been around longer than the German Nazi party lasted, and still no one takes them seriously. Until they do, there are better things to worry about (including, as I noted, the popularity of anti-Semitism practically everywhere except America).
