All even

New England Guy is among those shocked and appalled by my insensitivity and that of others.

Here's the lead sentence for one of NPR's top two or three stories at 6 a.m., moments ago: "Even following the shootings at Virginia Tech, gun control is a tough sell on Capitol Hill." How do you feel about that one, NG? Anonymous? I am I more predictable, or less predictable, than NPR?

(Keep in mind, that's the "news." If I provoke LAGuy about it, he'll say he was talking about newspapers, not radio, and then he'll tell me the news section is different from the op-ed page.)

I can't quite figure out the nut graph of the story. I think it was that the Brady Bill has expired. I'll have another listen when NPR gets it posted on its "Breaking News" site.

I was unaware I was shocked and appalled by your insensitivity- perhaps you have mirrors into my soul that I am unaware of. I thought I ws commenting on the President's people's response which was not about your post unless you are one of them? I just thought having the initial response to a national tragedy constitute an assay in partisan posturing was a little nutty (wing-nutty even). These must be the same Einsteins who ran the 06 congressional campaign or are handling Alberto's PR on the Hill.

Well, all right. But how about this: Can I say you were shocked and appalled by my presumptiousness?

(I admit, I was blending you with QG, but I figure I've been picking on him enough, and besides, blending is cool for news and academics, isn't it?)

SWMBCg, etc.

Say, wait a minute. You rascal; you never responded to my NPR question. What would you say they are, a little nutty? N-PRutty, even?

SEWMBCg, etc.

Your remark, coming on the same day as the tragedy (within hours), seemed more insensitive than an analysis (on either side) coming a day or two later.

What is amazing to me, is that both kinds of gun nut were certain before any facts were on the table that this incident proves their point.

Their insensitivity is part of a different debate (coarsening of our culture) which LAGuy feels is as mythical as toothfairy and media bias.

I'd say NPR was batty (perhaps even moonbatty) but right after the handgun murders of 32 people, I still feel asserting the right to bear arms was more out of tune than asking about gun control. It shows an ideological focus divorced from reality and the public mood. (I also saw Geraldo on FOX last night in his freakish way condemning the tragedy but still defending outpatient mental illness treatment which struck a similar- but then again I don't think even the Supreme Court would make Geraldo president)

It might be fairer to ask why the MSM yesterday ended repeated the second amendment quote in all of the early stories and not any of the other things the Prez's party liners said, but they did say it and one of the reasons you hire PR folks is so that stupid quotable things don't get said. This admin isn't even trying any more.

NE Guy, if the politics of this issue were like you say, then it would be easy to get stricter national gun control. The failure to see it passed is a sign that you have a political tin ear, not the Bush administration.

NeG, you need to write more for the main page:

"then again I don't think even the Supreme Court would make Geraldo president)"

That's fabulous.

I prefer QG's neepers to moonbats, though.
