LAGuy And The Great Lake State

As faithful readers know, I'm from Michigan. (I can't think of a single friend here who's from LA.) And I recently found two interesting Michigan websites.

First, I always like to keep in touch with Ann Arbor, and I found a great blog that discusses the scene there (which right now includes the Art Fair--it's not art and it's not fair): The Brouhaha. Apparently--according to the July 4th entry--Trader Joes has finally made it into town. The website wonders if TJ's could sustain a second store in town. Well, since we have one about every other block in LA, I'm guessing yes.

Anyway, check out The Brouhaha if you're going to Ann Arbor, or even if you're not.

Then, in a fit of nostalgia, I checked out this site on Michigan drive-ins. Those were the days--bad movies, uncomfortable seating, bad food, horrible sound. Why did it die out? I guess it was Daylight Savings that did it in. But maybe global warming will allow them to stay open 12 months a year up in Michigan, and someone will give it another shot.

I'm from L.A.! Born in the San Fernando Valley in 1964. Lived through the 1971 and 1994 earthquakes.

But I lived in Seattle for ten years after 1994, and now, to my great dismay, I find myself in the Bay Area.

I'm part of the forgotten generation after the baby boom but before GenX. When I was young, every friend I had in elementary school had been born in Los Angeles, but our parents were all from the midwest or back east. Of all my friends in my generation, only one has a parent born in L.A. (Pasadena, actually).

The drive-in culture even back in the late 70s in suburban Pittsburgh was wonderful- they had classy names just like the downtown moviehouses. (Interestingly- one drive-in was called "The Dependable" out by the airport only showed porno double features--with wonderfully evocative titles- I wonder if it was ever a hazrd to flight navigation). It was also damn near close to impossible to see from the back seat of a sedan if you more than 5 feet tall.

However my parents- depression-era children- forbad drive-ins [not because of the porno, we lived far from the airport] because they couldn't stand the idea of the car radio being on for 2 hours draining the battery. (As they aged, they also unplugged VCRs and cable boxes on anything with a clock that stayed on- saving upwards of $1.00 per month on the utility bill)
