Dolly's Folly

I sometimes watch the late-night Poker After Dark. Recently, they've added an intro where Doyle Brunson spouts gnomic wisdom such as You Don't Stop Playing Because You Get Old, You Get Old Because You Stop Playing.

Doyle, you're the master, and I'd be glad to hear your war stories, but I don't watch poker on TV to learn lessons.

Well- I don't particularly understand bowling or golf on TV, but I'll ask anyway- why would someone watch poker on TV?

I'll confess. I watch poker on tv occasionally. It's a great format for understanding human psychology and intimidation, lying as practiced by absolute masters, and math practice akin to sudoku. The dream also is that you'll watch and hopefully learn enough to win more the next time you play.

The great revolution in televised poker came years ago with the minicam that showed us the players' hole cards. Now we could fully enjoy the game, being able to watch both the players' strategies (it's more about the betting than the cards) and also have knowledge the players don't as to whether they're destroying their opponent of driving off a cliff.

Poker has the added bonus of being a game where, as opposed to bowling or golf, it's imaginable you could beat the masters (in the short run).
