Governor Clinton of New York?

The XX Factor on Slate suggests this is a dignified way for Hillary to drop out of the race (being the junior partner on a Obama ticket would not be, apparently) . She can truly claim to have great experience cleaning up after this kind of mess.

Interesting notion since it assumes Eliot Spitzer has committed an unpardonable sin and will disappear into the wind. I don't quite get the vitriol the fair sex is spewing at him (although I would agree that $5500 for an hour of nookie is the dumbest investment since Mitt Romney put $42 million into his campaign). Sure it especially stupid to get involved with a criminal activity when you've made your name crusading against vice, but in some ways its less offensive than an affair (unless Eliot brought a NY cop detail with him to the Mayflower) .

Is this maybe a set-up & payback of some kind by Wall Street?

Now that it looks like Hillary has a chance, all the Obama fans want her to drop out. Of course, they pretend it's all for the good of the party.

XX factor is a women's blog- these are Obama fans?

Well Hillary has a chance to come from behind, replace the winner of 29 states and counting and turn off a large segment of new independent voters (Remember McCain as the maverick tends to attract independents who are by and large less ideological and issue-driven and a significant number would shy away from the more overtly partisan candidate in an election)

It doesn't seem like a terribly attractive option for the Democratics except for true-blue Hillary-lovers and members of the old guard who would lose power among new faces

Democrats get to decide their nominee, and Hillary has half of them on her side. (Actually more, since many who voted for Obama were independents who said they're Democrats). She won Ohio and Florida, the two states that decided the last two elections. She represents the "Old Guard", i.e., the only successful winner for the Democrats in the past 30 years, while Obama belongs to the McGovernite branch. She wins among traditional democrats, and wins big among the largest minority/swing voters, the Hispanics, who are turned off by Obama.

No wonder Obama supporters think she should just drop out.

"its less offensive than an affair"

Maybe we should just say it's offensive and leave it at that. Otherwise it looks like we're making excuses.

And where is the vitriol? What I've seen so far on TV is mostly fascination. (Just a funny note: did anyone see Heidi Fleiss on Nightline? She claimed that all men are like this -- "just look at Adam & Eve.")

But I agree that Spitzer will not disappear. At the very least, he will become a political commentator on cable news within 2 years.

Yes Democrats are free to lose if they so choose.

Which is more likely- Will hispanics and traditional democrats abandon Obama in a general election or will independents abandon Clinton?

I think the notion that hispanics are anti-Obama was partially dispelled in the Texas primary/caucus, where Obama came out with more delegates than Clinton.

Obama lost big among Hispanics in Texas. He got more delegates due to complicated caucus and general delagate counting rules.

As far as who will win the general election, Obama is untested, and the few tests he has had that really count--particularly Ohio, Florida and soon Pennsylvania--things don't look that good.

As far as Spitzer goes and the relativity of moral assessments, I tend to think of him as a thug, albeit an occasionally useful one in sticking it to insider perks so I am not really bothered by him going down (no pun intended)

However, I'm not sure I would think it was a resignable offense if someone I otherwise liked went to high class call girls (or low classs ones for that matter) -stupid yes in terms of the publicity and exposure, but not necessarily fatal. Maybe I can rationalize that the officials I otherwise liked would not do such a thing.
