All Over But The Counting

John Heilemann has a piece in New York magazine about how Obama is doing poorly in the polls because of...racism.

Obama leads among African-Americans by more than 9 to 1, and among Latinos 2 to 1. Meanwhile, McCain leads among whites 5 to 4. (All numbers approximate.) What more proof do you need?

Not completely on point but an example of slipperiness of racial classification. Much ballyhoo was made this week of the fact that whites are projected to no longer be the the majority of the USA population by sometime in the 2040s. OK demographics is demographics, right? Wrong, someone decided (I don't know if its the census or those reporting on it)that "whites" does not include Hispanics even those classify themselves as white (which I believe close to half of those reporting themselves as Hispanics on the census do). If you count those, the self-professed "whites" continue their numerical hegemony through the century.
Of course maybe people like me are the problem, despite my 100% Celtic-Germanic origins, I always check "other" when asked for my race with the aim of hopefully hopelessly skewing phrenology-equivalent race-based classifications.
