Shatner's right, of course. There is only one Kirk - or Spock, for that matter.
Which is just one reason why the Star Trek reboot will suck monkey scrotum. Feel free to quote me.
OK-Question I've never asked but has been debated in the Star trek Universe- Why is Cap'n Kirk's middle name "Tiberius"-- A rather nasty Roman Emperor known for child sex and the Caesar who employed Pontius Pilate.
Did they think it just sounded cool?
Indeed, it only gets 2 stars on the baby naming site. Though I don't think he was necessarily as bad as your description. He is generally regarded by modern scholars as an excellent general and diplomat who left the treasury better than he found it. As to the reputation for debauchery, generally speaking, you've got to take any negative personal portrayals in Roman history as more a reflection of having pissed off the senators than having been legitimately bad. But yeah, my guess is they just thought it sounded cool.
My knowledge of Roman emperors comes large from the book (and PBS version of) "I, Claudius"
Interestingly, Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) played Tiberius' ambitious underling Sejanus in the PBS series (As I recall, Tiberius had he and his young daughters dispatched gruesomely)
My guess is it's because Tiberius was the emperor when Jesus came of age, and Kirk is meant to be the second coming.
That, or they tried James Caligula Kirk and it just didn't work.
Geek trivia: In the three seasons of the live-action ST, he was just "James T. Kirk". The middle name was first mentioned in the animated episode Bem.
This episode was written by David Gerrold, so I'm guessing he is the one who came up with "Tiberius". Maybe he just thought it sounded powerful and didn't know the history of the emperor?
Did Gerrold call the episode "The Trouble With Tiberius"?
