The Big Picture

The last two weeks, when I watched Saturday Night Live I noticed I couldn't see what they were showing on the right and left of the screen. I could tell beause when they use graphics, they go over the side. I'm guessing they're broadcasting a widescreen show and, for some reason, instead get a TV ratio with letterboxing, I'm not getting the black bands at top and bottom. I wonder if this is happening to anyone else?

Beginning about two weeks ago, this has been happening to me on all NBC shows (perhaps others too, but I noticed it on SNL and on Heroes).

I would guess it's related to the abandoning of the non-HD format? Yet I have cable and a widescreen TV, so having the left and right of the show cropped when there's a blank unused portion of my TV that is just aching to show me the missing bits is annoying.

This must be affecting tens of thousands of Americans, so the explanation should be out there somewhere....
