Help

The Parents Television Council is warning radio stations not to broadcast Britney Spears's new song "If U Seek Amy," saying doing so would violate the broadcast indecency law. When said aloud quickly, the title produces a sound akin to a vulgarity. "There is no misinterpreting the lyrics to this song, and it's certainly not about a girl named Amy," said Council President Tim Winter.

I thought I was up to date on vulgarities but.....

Yes, I get the question. What I'm wondering about is are you posting it because it's so obvious what they're trying to get away with that you think it should just lay there, or you don't get what they're trying to do?

And SWMBC, you obviously don't quite get it.

THE TITLE SAYS "F-U-C-K ME".

Thank you- I was guessing it it meant "If you sucka me" but that didn't really make sense. I'm sure you were one of the brave souls who uncovered the fact that AC/DC stood for "AntiChrist Devil's Children" Thanks to brave anonymi out there we can all be safe from those who "get away with" such things

I wonder if spelling a vulgarity counts under indecency law? People say "F-Word" all the time on the radio and TV, and there is no question what word they are referring to, but i thought it was fine because they didn't use the actual vulgarity.

The FCC regularly says context counts, and they're also afraid of prior restraint, so they've never clear on the rules. All we know is if they're allowed enough power, they can destroy you.

SWMBCg here, and I certainly don't get it. Is "Amy" pronouced with a silent A outside of Ohio? But it's nice to see Owen Meany commenting on the blog.

The A in "Amy" is the "ay" sound in the letter "K" in F-U-C-K.

Okay, the song is annoying, but I have to admit it's very catchy:

But it's still not as catchy as Japanese pop written for six-year-old kids:

And no dirty words (in any language) in that one.

It's actually a pretty good song, but the main line is "All of the boys and all of the girls are begging to If You Seek Amy" which doesn't really make sense except in its second meaning.

Is that "Japanese pop" really Japanese or is it American?

According to the universal source of knowledge, all the members of Puffy AmiYumi are Japanese.

And the girls can't even speak English. In fact, when they were on Jimmy Kimmel they had a translator with them.

Of course, their lyrics are translated here. Oddly, though, their theme song for the cartoon "Teen Titans" is played sometimes in English and sometimes in Japanese.

They sing the theme song for the cartoon "Teen Titans", and the theme song is sometimes broadcast on American TV in English and sometimes in Japanese. That's where I heard of this band. I was actually thunderstruck, especially after the excellent animated Batman series, that DC would have their Teen Titans series in anime style....
