Zimmy

It's the birthday of everyone's favorite septuagenerian, Bob Dylan.  His first album came out fifty years ago and he's got a new one coming out later this year.  How many great artists remain relevant that long?  He's gone from being the voice of a generation to a voice for all time.

(Original Dylan versions are taken down from YouTube pretty quickly, so I can only hope by the time this posts the videos above will still be working.)

I recently started listening to Woody Guthrie. He has some blues rambling songs, and when I heard the first one, my immediate reaction was, "He sounds just like the early Bob Dylan."

I don't consider Dylan's later material to be as stupendous as his earlier stuff. But unlike a lot of artists, his later stuff was indeed still significant. And when he did get into a rut, he didn't stay in it very long.

I like much of his later stuff but I have to admit I consider his stuff in the 60s his best, though his music in the 70s is almost as good. Still, considering most pop stars only do good, relevant work for about a decade or so, his track record is amazing.
