Ending The Year Looking Back

So Jesse Walker has gone back to the films of 1972, a time of experimentation (and blaxpoitation and pornography).

Here's his top ten:

1. The Godfather
2. The Ruling Class
3. Images
4. The Candidate
5. Frenzy
6. Sleuth
7. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
8. The King of Marvin Gardens
9. Cries and Whispers
10. Bone

Hard to find fault with this list. Not sure if all of them would make my top ten, but I like these films. (Haven't seen Bone.)

Here are his honorable mentions:

11. Tup-Tup
12. Play it Again, Sam
13. The Heartbreak Kid
14. Fat City
15. Love in the Afternoon
16. The Getaway
17. Deliverance
18. The Mechanic
19. Junior Bonner

20. Ulzana's Raid

Another pretty decent list. I haven't seen Tup-Tup and I don't know if I like the Peckinpah stuff that much, but overall pretty good.  #12 and maybe 13 would make my top ten.

Here are some other films of 1972 that might make my top ten (or twenty)

1776

Aguirre, The Wrath Of god

The Harder They Come

The Hot Rock

Pink Flamingos

Tout Va Bien

What's Up, Doc?

If you click back to the version of the list I posted a decade ago, you'll see that #12 and #13 originally *did* make my top ten...

A good year for movies, eh?

I just researched The Harder They Come – it holds up really well.

You like 1776! I thought I was the only one. This was another early DVD buy for me, based on warm recollections. I also saw it on Broadway (everyone who wentto HS anywhere need NYC I'm sure got a "field trip" to see 1776.

Personally I think the music and the voices are fantastic (except for the film version they changed the actor portraying Dickinson, and thgen had to cut his song from the theatrical release!)

I also have good memories of Silent Running. I think cute robots in this film had to have inspired George Lucas in creating R2D2. But I haven't seen this one in decades, so I may be mistaken.

Lincoln is a lot like a non-musical version of 1776.

And another thing, Denver Guy. You should go back to the predictions you made for 2012 and see how you did.
