May Day

Happy birthday, Brian May.  As a guitarist for Queen, he had one of the most distinctive sounds in rock.  He also wrote some of their biggest songs.  And is an astrophysicist.

Killer Queen was written by Freddie, but the other two were written by Brian.

And here's a great Queen song that Brian wrote and sang. I think it's the only rock song based on the time dilation that occurs when a spaceship travels close to the speed of light. See, his study of astrophysics really paid off!

You mean he didn't pen the line about the girl Weatherhurst, Connecticut being godified in cheddar cheese? How about Fat Bottomed Girls? That would involve some physics.

By the way, I chose "Killer Queen" because it was the song that introduced Brian May's guitar sound to a lot of people.

I've always considered May and Mercury the Lennon and McCartney of the band, songwriting-wise (if L&M wrote separately) with Taylor the George Harrison and Deacon the Ringo Starr.
